My name is Mrs. Garvey and I am your Economics and Government teacher this semester..
I want you to know that I believe in you and your ability to succeed in my class. I am very excited to begin another school year and look forward to helping each of you meet your academic and personal goals. Most of you are seniors and looking forward to graduating and moving on to the next phase of your lives. It is an exciting time for you and can’t wait to hear about all of your achievements and successes and help work with you through all of your challenges and struggles.
. If you are going to learn anything from me, from this class, and each other, I truly believe you have to understand who I am and where I am coming from. I also believe that I have to understand you and where you are coming from, so please feel free to share with me as well.
Here is a little bit about me: I have lived in Georgia my entire life. I grew up in the ‘burbs (in Dunwoody) and went to college at the University of Georgia. I majored in History and Comparative Literature. By the time I graduated college, I knew that I wanted to go into teaching, so right after graduation, I immediately went to graduate school at Georgia State to get my Masters’ degree in Social Studies education. This will be my 14th year teaching, but this is only my 4th year here at Pebblebrook High School. I taught in Clayton County for 10 years before I came here. It has been truly great becoming a part of the Falcon family. As a teacher, something you should know about me is that I will always go above and beyond to help any student who is willing to put forth the effort. I have high expectations for all of my students, but I am also here to help students meet and exceed those expectations I have.
I have been lucky enough to have been married for almost 6 years now. My husband is probably the best person I know. He is the smartest person I know and he is thoughtful and kind (although if you ever meet him, please don’t tell him I said so). He’s not quite as funny as he thinks he is, but still pretty funny and he’s also my best friend. We have one dog named Huck, he is a german shepherd/Rottweiler mix (I will most likely show pictures at some point this semester) and we have a little dwarf hamster named Louise (named after Louise in Bob’s Burgers).
I love to take walks and take pictures. I enjoy hiking around nature trails and mountains. I also enjoy just wandering around and taking photos of cities and buildings. Whenever I go to visit a new city, one of my favorite things to do is just to walk around it and get a feel for what the city is like. I like going to various festivals around the city: art festivals, music festivals, lantern parades, etc. I like seeing bands play. I love music. I love how music can be both relaxing and energizing and the great effect it can have on your mood. When I have a large task in front of me, listening to music that I love will often get me through it. The Tabernacle is probably my favorite music venue here in Atlanta. Even though I don’t know a ton about a lot of sports, I do like going to games. I like going to baseball, basketball, football, and soccer games. When Atlanta had a hockey team, I liked going to those games too! I have noticed that the fans at the soccer games are more energetic and fun than probably any other in Atlanta, so I’m so excited that Atlanta United is here!
I truly am looking forward to working with and getting to know all of you! Together, we can make it a great year!
