This upcoming unit may be one of the most important units in US Government: Elections and Civic Participation. Why do I think it is so important? Because MANY of you are going to be old enough to vote in this upcoming election! If you understand the influence that YOU can have in your community, city, state, country, and world then you will be more likely to get involved and make your voice heard! This unit focuses on: The election process, political ideologies and political parties, the importance of voting, the influence that media and interest groups can have on an election, as well as our rights and responsibilities as citizen of the United States. I believe that it is very important to be an informed citizen and to try to have a positive impact on the community, city, state, country, and world. This Unit will last 2 weeks and the unit Assignments are actually the LAST of the lessons for US Government! That does NOT mean your education is done though! I encourage you to do one of the most important things that any citizen can do: Stay informed! Know what is going on around you and always try to create solutions and action plans is something that a good citizen (not just a good student) does all of the time! Research the people who are running for office (not just the President of the United States—but people running for Congress, and people who are running for positions in state and local governments as well. The decisions that these government officials make matter and can have a huge impact on your life—so you want to support the people who are going to work FOR you and represent YOU! Being informed and getting involved in any way you see fit is so important and I urge you to do both. You are all wonderful people full of potential, talent, creativity, and drive—and I cannot wait to see what you all do in this world!
